ESD / Antistatic Flooring
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Epoxy flooring protects electronics from damage caused by static electricity, which accumulates while people walk. Conductive elements such as carbon, graphite or metal-coated particles, distributed throughout the epoxy flooring material, give ESD floors electrical conductivity, and create an electrical pathway from the walking surface to ground.
We have two primary of flooring to reduce or dissipatestatic electricity:
-
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) Flooring
-
Antistatic Flooring

ESD Epoxy Flooring
ESD Epoxy flooring is a type of flooring that is designed to dissipate static electricity. It is often used in electronic assembly areas to protect sensitive electronic components from damage.
ESD flooring is made from a conductive material, like carbon, that is mixed with an epoxy resin. This mixture is then applied to the floor and allowed to cure. Once it is cured, the flooring is electrically conductive and will dissipate static electricity.
ESD epoxy flooring is used in many industries, including the semiconductor industry, the electronics industry, and the computer industry. It is also used in hospitals and other medical facilities. ESD epoxy flooring is an important part of protecting electronic equipment from damage.
Antistatic Flooring
Antistatic flooring is a type of flooring that is designed to reduce static electricity. Static electricity can be a problem in many industries, as it can damage sensitive equipment or cause injuries.
Antistatic flooring has some chemical coatings that dissipates static across the floor and it can never build up enough charge to create an electric shock
ESD or Antistatic Flooring
Choosing between antistatic or ESD flooring depend of the working environment. In some workplaces and industries, static buildup can be dangerous, while in others it is merely an inconvenience.
Antistatic Flooring, if static electricity is not a fundamental risk to your process or working environment. The floor won’t generate static, but it can’t completely eliminate it or dissipate static that has built up in your body.
For a higher level of protection against static electricity, you need ESD flooring.
ESD flooring is the best option for industries or workplaces that have objects or use equipment susceptible to electrostatic discharge. If the environment uses combustible materials must use ESD over antistatic flooring.
ESD flooring standards are based on an ESD flooring/footwear combination. Some, but not all, ESD floors also prevent charge generation – i.e., static from accumulating as people walk. Thus, it’s critical to determine the type of footwear people will use in the space. When choosing an ESD floor, always test for both electrical resistance (STM7.1) and charge generation (STM97.2-2014).
